In case you don’t know, Penn Jillette (of Penn and Teller) has declared that he’s an atheist. I wasn’t aware of that until I came across this video, where he describes an encounter he had with a man who gives him a Bible. If you have a dial-up Internet connection, I’m sorry for your loss. I can’t convey the power of the whole video, but I tried to put the most important statement below.
If ever there was a powerful statement to give you motivation for evangelism, here it is.
Penn: “I don’t respect people that don’t proselytize [witness/ attempt to convert someone]…How much do you have to hate somebody to not proselytize?”
I wonder how many of us have grown up in church families and assume that everyone has heard the gospel and just rejected it. Or, for that matter, I wonder how many have actually heard it preached correctly, with sin, righteousness, and judgment as the foundation of the message before the cure of Christ is ever shown. How many times have you passed up an opportunity to witness because you were afraid of social awkwardness? If we really believe that hell is a real place and that someone is going there, why would we not tell them? I firmly believe that if God would give every Christian in the world a realistic dream about hell, we would have widespread evangelism the next morning!
