How to be Saved

Components of Salvation

A. Faith

  1. Genuine (Romans 10:9)

  2. In Jesus Christ alone (John 14:6)

 B. Repentance/ Lordship (submission, TLC)

Scriptures: Mark 6:12; Matt. 9:13; Luke 13:3-5; 16:30; II Peter 3:9, 15; II Chron. 7

  1. Genuine (no lip service) Matt. 15:8-9 (Mark 7:6-7); Isaiah 1:11-20; 29:13; Luke 6:46
  2. Complete (no darling lusts) Mat. 5:27-30; 18:8-9; Mark 10:17-23
  3. God initiated and accompanied by contrition: II Cor. 7:10; Rom. 2:4; Acts 5:31; I Cor. 1:9; Rom. 8:30,33; John 6:44; 17:2
  • Prerequisites to Repentance/Submission

a.       Knowledge of sin: We can’t turn from sin if we don’t know what sin is.  Gal. 3:24

b.      Count the cost of a life of repentance and submission: There must be a point when we decide on a TLC.  We don’t fall away with a failure to submit because God sustains those who are genuinely in Him. Luke 14:26-33; Mat. 10:37-39; 16:24-25 (Mark 8:34-37; Luke 9:23-25); Luke 17:33; 18:18-30 (Matt. 19:16-26; Mark 10:17-27)

c.       Contrition: The proud heart must be broken before it can truly commit to Christ.  Prov. 3:34; I Peter 5:5; Jas. 4:6-10; Mark 4:16 (Matt. 13:20; Luke 8:13); Matt. 11:21; 18:3-4; Acts 2:37; II Cor. 7:10

  3. Literal definition of repentance: “Meta”:change, after; “Noeo”:knowledge, mind.  All changes must be from “A” to “B”.  Matt. 9:13; 12:41; Luke 13:3; Is. 55:6-7; 59:20; Ps. 66:18; I Peter 1:15; Jer. 8:6; Is. 1    Jesus ministry was repentance (Matt. 4:17), but his message wasn’t to proclaim his Messiahship. Mark 1:24-25 (Luke 4:31-37); Mark 1:34; Matt. 9:30; Matt. 12:16
  4. Philippian jailer (Acts 16)

  8. Number of times repentance/believe used
  9. Disposition of grace (Acts 20:21-24)
